Prosecutor Prevails in Her Harassment Suit Against Denton County |
| A Denton County assistant district attorney who was harassed on the job because of her race has won $510,000 in damages from the county to compensate her for a "hostile work environment." In its June 21 verdict, the jury in U.S. District Judge Ron Clark's Eastern District of Texas court found that Denton County Assistant Criminal District Attorney Nadiya Williams-Boldware was harassed because of her race; the harassment was "so sufficiently severe or pervasive as to effect a term, condition, or privilege" of her employment; Denton County knew, or should have known, that she was being harassed because of her race; and Denton County failed to take prompt remedial action. Purported E-Mails Suggest Paterno May Have Altered Decision Not to Report Abuse |
| Former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno may have played a greater role than previously known in a decision made by university officials not to report a 2001 incident involving former coach Jerry Sandusky and a boy in a locker room shower, according to e-mails written by university officials. The alleged e-mails, the contents of which were first reported by CNN, were among other documents, including a Sandusky file, discovered by Penn State and turned over to state prosecutors as part of ongoing investigations, according to both Penn State and prosecutors. Number of Uninsured Drivers in TX Roads Drops Sharply |
| The number of uninsured drivers in TX has dropped dramatically from a year ago — more than 38 percent — thanks in part to a 4-year-old program aimed at getting those drivers either insured or off the road. State officials are not giving all the credit to the TexasSure vehicle insurance program, saying that a large part of the decline is attributable to cleaning up the database on the state’s nearly 20 million licensed drivers. Expert Witness Need Not Have Same Medical Specialty |
| A vascular surgeon is qualified to testify about whether an orthopedic surgeon breached the standard of care, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals has ruled. The appeals court said vascular and orthopedic practices sometimes overlap, making the specialties “related.” The ruling comes after a trial in which a jury found Elkton, Md.-based orthopedic surgeon Brian C. DeMuth, MD, liable for negligence. Walter Strong sued Dr. DeMuth in 2009. He claimed that the doctor failed to properly treat his leg after knee surgery, leading to amputation of the limb. Dr. DeMuth denied any wrongdoing. Alicia Gallegos, American Medical News 07/03/2012 | Read Article: American Medical News |

Girl Dies in Missouri Detention Center, Suit Filed |
| The family of a girl who died in a juvenile detention center in February has filed a wrongful death suit against the center and a Jackson County, Mo., hospital. The lawsuit claims the girl was given a birth control patch by doctors while in custody in November, and died of a blood clot, a dangerous side effect of the patch. The suit also blames center staff for failing to quickly act when the girl complained of chest pains the morning of her death.
