Click on the headline to register. | Texas Tribune Daily Brief | | Suit Filed by Family of Teen Shot by Girlfriend's Father | | The family of a teenager who was shot by his girlfriend's father has filed a lawsuit. The teen was shot by his girlfriend's father, a 50-year-old elementary school teacher, while he hid in the girl's bedroom closet. According to the lawsuit, filed in Madison County Circuit Court on Tuesday, the two teens were playing video games in the girl's room when the boy became startled and hid in the girl's closet. The father of the girl alleges that he brought the gun upstairs to protect his daughter and that the gun misfired and shot the boy in the stomach. The lawsuit filed by the boy's family alleges negligence and recklessness/wantonness. The father of the girl was arrested and charged with first-degree assault in the shooting and has been placed on administrative leave from his teaching position. U.S. District Judge Barbara Rothstein tossed the verdict for James Hausman on Monday and ordered a new trial, the Associated Press reports. She ruled after Hausman's former personal assistant, Amy Mizeur, contacted the defendant, Holland America, and said Hausman had deleted emails sought by the cruise line and had failed to disclose a personal email account.
