Confidential Deals Can Obscure Sexual Misconduct Allegations Against Doctors as Cleveland Clinic Case Shows

The Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation's largest and most renowned hospitals, knew of at least two cases in which one of its surgeons was accused of raping patients but kept him on the staff while reaching a confidential settlement, a USA TODAY investigation has found. Ryan Williams, a colorectal surgeon accused in police reports by two women of anally raping them in 2008 and 2009, left Cleveland Clinic last summer for another hospital, which placed him on leave after learning of the complaints against him.

Roy Moore Facing Defamation Lawsuit by Sexual Abuse Accuser

A woman who accused U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore of sexual abuse has filed a defamation lawsuit against the politician and his campaign. The plaintiff alleged that Moore "touched her sexually when she was 14 years old" and he was a 32-year-old assistant district attorney in 1979. The lawsuit filed on Thursday alleges that the Alabama woman faced harsh personal attacks from Moore after she came out with the claims of sexual abuse. The lawsuit seeks financial compensation in addition to a declaratory judgment of defamation, a public apology from Moore, and a court-enforced ban on him or his campaign publicly attacking her again.

Southwest Airlines has agreed to pay $15 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that it conspired with other airlines to limit capacity to keep air fares high. The lawsuit was filed against the nation's four largest airlines: Southwest, American, Delta, and United. As alleged in the complaint, the airlines conspired to limit the number of new seats they added to raise airfares despite lower fuel costs. Representatives for American, Delta and United say they plan to fight the lawsuit.
