Trump Administration Eases Nursing Home Fines in Victory for Industry
spacer image
The Trump administration is scaling back the use of fines against nursing homes that harm residents or place them in grave risk of injury, part of a broader relaxation of regulations under the president. The new guidelines discourage regulators from levying fines in some situations, even when they have resulted in a resident's death. The guidelines will also probably result in lower fines for many facilities.

Care Suffers as More Nursing Homes Feed Money Into Corporate Webs
spacer image
In what has become an increasingly common business arrangement, owners of nursing homes outsource a wide variety of goods and services to companies in which they have a financial interest or that they control. Nearly three-quarters of nursing homes in the United States ' more than 11,000 ' have such business dealings, known as related party transactions, according to an analysis of nursing home financial records by Kaiser Health News. Some homes even contract out basic functions like management or rent their own building from a sister corporation. Such corporate webs bring owners a legal benefit, too: When a nursing home is sued, injured residents and their families have a much harder time collecting money from the related companies ' the ones with the full coffers.

Regulators Open Probe of Goodyear Motor Home Tires Failures
spacer image
U.S. safety regulators are investigating whether some older Goodyear motor home tires can fail and cause crashes and possibly deaths. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it began the probe after a court ordered the release of Goodyear data from lawsuits, which had been sealed under court orders and confidential settlement agreements. According to the data, the G159 tires failed while in use, resulting in deaths and injuries. The agency says in documents posted Jan. 1 that the number of claims suggests the failures could be caused by a safety defect. Goodyear wasn't required to report many of the claims to NHTSA under federal law. The investigation covers about 40,000 tires from 1996 to 2003.

Wrongful Death

Lawsuit Filed After Fatal Escalator Incident at Portland Airport
spacer image
Alaska Airlines is facing a lawsuit by the family of a woman who died after an escalator accident. The lawsuit, filed on Wednesday, alleges that the airline left the elderly disabled woman alone despite repeated and clear reminders that she needed assistance. According to the lawsuit, the woman failed to receive the "gate-to-gate escort" that she was promised when she landed in Oregon on June 7. Instead, the woman had to find her own way, the lawsuit alleges. The woman died three months after the incident at Portland International Airport in which she fell down 21 escalator steps with her wheelchair on top of her.
