VW Suspends Chief Lobbyist Over Monkey Tests Scandal
spacer image
Volkswagen has suspended its chief lobbyist Thomas Steg amid continuing fallout from revelations that the German carmaker had sponsored tests of toxic diesel fumes on monkeys. VW said it had accepted Mr Steg's offer to step down from his role. He will remain suspended until the issue of the tests has been fully clarified, the company said. The experiments, first reported by the New York Times last week, were designed to show how much cleaner diesel vehicles fitted with the latest technology were compared with older models. It was also hoped that they would help rebut a 2012 finding by an arm of the World Health Organization that classified diesel exhaust as a carcinogen.
