Students Abused, School Didn't Report it To Police

The families of three young girls have filed a lawsuit against the San Diego Rock Church Academy, claiming they were molested by one of their teachers. The lawsuit contends that despite the fact that the school was notified that the teacher had been seen alone with two of the victims on his lap in a darkened classroom during "movie day", the school did not call the police or conduct an investigation. The alleged victims are in elementary school.

Toyota Sanctions Waiver Might Explain Purported Settlement

spacer image

A sudden-acceleration lawsuit against Toyota Motor Corp.—which the plaintiff's attorney says has settled—was declared a bellwether case because it raises issues similar to hundreds of pending wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits against the automaker. Except for one thing: sanctions. That distinction may be one reason why Toyota wants to settle the case, according to legal experts following the litigation. U.S. District Judge James Selna in Santa Ana, Calif., concluded in June that Toyota had committed discovery abuses by inspecting the crash vehicle in Van Alfen v. Toyota without notifying the plaintiffs or their attorneys. He said at the time that, as punishment, he would allow the jury to infer that evidence Toyota gathered from the inspection would be detrimental to its defense.

Texas Lawyer Takes Aim at 'Revenge Porn' Site

spacer image

A Texas lawyer has filed a class-action suit for women who claim spurned partners posted stolen nude photos of them on a “revenge porn” site. The lawsuit focuses on a site where ex-boyfriends and ex-husbands apparently have posted private photos of their exes without permission in retaliation for breakups. 23 women from around the state have signed onto the suit, which will be filed in Galveston County, and the attorney anticipates more will join. The lawsuit will claim invasion of privacy and mental anguish.

16.2 Million Vehicles Recalled in 2012, Safety Agency Says

spacer image

A total of 16.2 million vehicles were recalled last year, with slightly more than half made by Toyota and Honda, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Thursday. In a statement attached to the recall list the safety agency noted this “analysis should not be interpreted as an indication of what N.H.T.S.A. thinks of any particular manufacturer or its products.”

More than a fourth of Texas' 100 top transportation challenges are in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and two of the worst roads include two sections of Interstate 35W north of downtown Fort Worth, a report released Thursday concluded. In all, 26 of the 100 biggest transportation challenges in the state are in North Texas, based on factors such as road conditions, congestion and cost of improvement, according to a report released by TRIP, a Washington-based organization that favors increased highway funding.

Suit: Man Texting While Driving, Caused Fatal Accident

The death of a 15-year-old Utah boy who was killed in a car accident has prompted a suit by the boy's family against the driver of the car involved. The suit alleges 28-year-old Jeffery Bascom was texting while driving, causing him to drift off the road and strike the victim, who was walking down the sidewalk. In Utah, texting while driving is a second-degree felony.

Arizona Police Named in Fatal Shooting Lawsuit

spacer image

The Las Cruces, Ariz., Police Department has been hit with a wrongful death lawsuit over the fatal shooting of a local man during a December 2011 arrest. The man was shot 11 times in the back by three police officers as, a witness on scene said, he fled on foot with his hands cuffed behind his back. An internal police investigation states that the man had grabbed a gun from his car, which contradicts eyewitness testimony that his hands were bound.
