Bus Driver Fired For Facebook Post Files Lawsuit

A former school bus driver from Haralson County, Ga. has filed a lawsuit against the school district who fired him because of a Facebook post. The plaintiff was fired from his job after venting on Facebook about a conversation he had with one of the students on his bus. The lawsuit contends that the plaintiff's termination was a violation of his constitutional right to free and protected speech.

Racial Discrimination Suit in Texas Settles for $831K

An $831,000 settlement has been reached in a discrimination lawsuit filed by a former police chief from Jasper, Texas. The plaintiff alleged that he was discriminated against when he was fired from his position. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff was portrayed in a negative light on a radio station owned by the town's mayor in order to spur racial animosity in the city. The settlement is the largest such employment discrimination settlement in Jasper County to date.

Ninth Lawsuit Filed Over 2013 Chemical Plant Explosion

A ninth lawsuit has been filed over an explosion at a chemical plant in Geismar, La. last June. The explosion was caused by a flammable vapor cloud which ignited. It created a massive fireball and killed two people while injuring 114 others. The latest lawsuit, filed by a contracting company, alleges that the plant had a history of problems with handling chemicals. According to the lawsuit, the plant's history includes "citations, warnings and shut-downs due to improper storage and handling of chemicals including propylene." The lawsuit is seeking class-action status to include other workers, residents and businesses affected by the incident.

Jasper Settles Discrimination Case with Former Police Chief

The town of Jasper agreed to pay its former police chief, the first African-American to hold the post, $800,000 to settle a federal civil rights lawsuit filed in the wake of his June 2012 dismissal. The town's outside counsel confirmed that the City Council has agreed to settle the action with former Police Chief Rodney Pearson. Also named as defendants were Jasper Mayor Mike Lout, the town's human resources director, Joe Whitener, and two individuals. The city will pay Pearson $350,000 on behalf of itself, Lout and Whitener. An additional $450,000 will be paid by the Texas Municipal League's Intergovernmental Risk Pool.

Drug Firms Argue Against $1.2B Arkansas Judgment

A lawyer for Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. argued Thursday that the Arkansas Supreme Court should reverse a $1.2 billion judgment because the trial judge improperly applied a law in the state's lawsuit over improper marketing of the antipsychotic drug Risperdal.

Service Corporation International Settles Lawsuit Alleging Body Dumping for 25 Years

A Los Angeles cemetery has agreed to an estimated $80 million settlement of a lawsuit claiming it dumped human remains from hundreds of graves. In the midst of a jury trial, a judge Thursday granted preliminary approval of the settlement involving Eden Memorial Park owned by Houston-based Service Corporation International. The class-action lawsuit claimed that for 25 years, employees broke open vaults and placed casket pieces and human remains in the cemetery's dump to make room for more graves.
