Female Attorneys Re-file Gender Discrimination Suit Against Brownsville, Texas

A group of female attorneys has re-filed a gender discrimination lawsuit against the City of Brownsville, Texas. The women filed the lawsuit last year alleging discriminatory hiring practices by city employees including the city manager, an executive assistant, city commissioners, and sitting municipal judges. The lawsuit was dismissed in November by U.S. District Judge Fernando Rodriguez, Jr. The women filed an amended complaint last Friday.

Boy Scouts of America Files for Bankruptcy in Wake of Abuse Lawsuits

After facing hundreds of lawsuits alleging sexual abuse, the Boy Scouts of America announced last week that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. "The bankruptcy is being filed as a result of decades of concealing abuse by the Boy Scouts and their adult leaders," said one attorney representing hundreds of men who allege they were abused while participating in the organization.

Texas Sues Company Whose Port Neches Chemical Plant Exploded

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued TPC Group over environmental violations associated with the Nov. 27 explosion at the companyâ??s Port Neches chemical plant, a blast that prompted widespread mandatory evacuations during the Thanksgiving holiday week. The suit, filed Friday on behalf of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in Travis County District Court, also alleges the Houston-based company violated clean air laws multiple times from January 2018 to September 2019. The suit seeks injunctive relief and civil penalties, as well as for TPC Group to cover its attorney fees, court costs and investigative costs.
