Flint Water Crisis Victims Increasingly Turn to Courts but Face Big Obstacles
spacer image
Thousands of people in Flint, Mich., are turning to the courts to seek compensation for the contamination of their water supply. But, despite clear evidence of widespread lead exposure, they face formidable legal obstacles and long waits for any money they ultimately might receive, according to experts. The main obstacle for the Flint legal actions is the well-established doctrine of 'sovereign immunity,' which shields state and federal governments from lawsuits except in a few, narrowly drawn circumstances.

Jury Awards $54M Construction Worker's Family
spacer image
A Harris County jury awarded about $54 million to the family of a construction worker killed in 2013 during the renovation of Kyle Field at Texas A&M. Angel Garcia, who was 28 when he died, was operating a Caterpillar loader on the fourth floor spiral ramp in the northeast section of Kyle Field. Named in the lawsuit were Manhattan-Vaughn, the lead construction company, Lindamood Demolition, Garcia's employer and Texas Cutting & Coring, another company at the site. The jury determined that Manhattan-Vaughn bore 75 percent of the responsibility while Lindamood Demolition was held 25 percent responsible for the circumstances at the stadium that led to Garcia's death. According to court documents, the jury concluded that neither Texas Cutting and Corning nor Garcia himself bore any responsibility.
