The city of Boston will pay $20,000 to settle a lawsuit with a transgender woman over the actions of officers who arrested her in May 2010. The plaintiff refused to leave a woman's bathroom at a homeless shelter, prompting officers to "force her to remove her shirt and bra and expose her breasts." The officers are being investigated by the city's internal affairs division.

U.S. Accuses S.&P. of Fraud in Suit on Loan Bundles

The Justice Department filed civil fraud charges late on Monday against the nation’s largest credit-ratings agency, Standard & Poor’s, accusing the firm of inflating the ratings of mortgage investments and setting them up for a crash when the financial crisis struck. More than a dozen state prosecutors are expected to join the federal suit, and the New York attorney general is preparing a separate action. The Securities and Exchange Commission has also been investigating possible wrongdoing at S.& P.

Los Angeles Archdiocese Is Accused of Failing to Release All Abuse Records

spacer image

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of LA released 12,000 pages of internal files on priests accused of sexually abusing children, saying that it was finally abiding by a settlement it signed with victims six years ago to make the painful history public. But it now appears that the files the church released with much fanfare are incomplete and many are unaccounted for, according to the abuse victims’ lawyers. At issue is whether the survivors of abuse and the public will ever learn which church officials were responsible for mishandling or covering up allegations of sexual abuse.

Judge: Texas School Finance System Unconstitutional

spacer image

A district judge in Texas has ruled that the state's school finance system violates the state constitution and is not adequately funded. Legal action against the system claimed that deep budget cuts combined with a rapid population growth in the state left the entire school system grossly unfunded. The judge ruled that funding inadequacies kept districts from setting tax rates as required by the state constitution.

California Sues BP over Waste Disposal

The California Attorney General's office has filed a lawsuit against British Petroleum, claiming BP set up gas stations in the state to dispose of hazardous waste. The suit claims that officials at BP instructed some gas stations "to position leak detection sensors so they were unable to detect leaks at the earliest possible opportunity." The state filed a similar lawsuit against ConocoPhillips in January.

Fed Investigators Urge Texas to Tighten Safety Rules

spacer image

The Chemical Safety Board has repeated its call for the Texas Railroad Commission to tighten safety precautions at oil and gas production sites across the state after an explosion in East Texas seriously injured two people last week. “The CSB is deeply concerned about accidents at oil and gas production sites across the country,” board Chairman Rafael Moure-Eraso said in a statement issued after a man and a woman, both 24, were hospitalized following an explosion and fire at a production facility in Van Zandt County Tuesday. The board has investigated several other incidents within the past few years, including at least three involving fatalities, and reported that children and young adults frequently gather at oil sites in rural areas, unaware of the explosion hazards from storage tanks and the risk that an ignition source — a match, cigarette, or cigarette lighter — can trigger an explosion and launch the tank into the air.
