Woman Awarded $7.2 Million in Bus Accident

spacer image

A Dallas jury has awarded a 24-year-old woman $7.2 million for injuries she suffered in a Greyhound bus crash in December 2007. According to the woman's lawsuit, the bus driver had been using a cell phone while driving the bus on an icy road and eventually lost control of the bus and it flipped over. The plaintiff suffered back, head and neck injuries in the accident, and the awarded damages will allow her to have surgery to correct the injuries.  Staff Report, The Sacramento Bee  12/19/2011

Drug giant Merck & Co. will pay $24 million to the state of Massachusetts to settle a lawsuit accusing the company of over-charging for some of its drugs. The lawsuit claimed Merck reported "false and inflated prices to services such as First Data Bank for a trio of treatments for asthma and other respiratory diseases," which affected state reimbursements. The settlement was the largest Medicaid fraud settlement in Massachusetts history.  Robert Weisman, Boston Globe  12/21/2011

Suit Filed After Girl Killed by Chunk of Ice at Cave

The death of an 11-year-old Washington girl in the Big Four Ice Caves has prompted a lawsuit against the U.S. Forest Services. The girl was killed when an ice chunk rolled down a mountain and struck her. According to the lawsuit, area signs "fail to adequately warn visitors of the potential danger from the kind of ice avalanche," that killed the girl. The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.  Christine Clarridge, Seattle Times  12/20/2011

$150B Award for Splendora Fire Victim's Family

spacer image

An attorney says a Texas jury has awarded the largest verdict he has ever heard of — $150 billion to the family of a man who died 12 years after being set afire as an 8-year-old. Robbie Middleton was set on fire near Splendora in Montgomery County on his 8th birthday in 1998. The attorney says the punitive damage award is symbolic and the family expects none of it will be paid. The defendant, Don Wilburn Collins, is currently imprisoned on an unrelated sexual assault charge. He was never charged and denies involvement in the 2010 death of 20-year-old Middleton.  Associated Press, Houston Chronicle  12/22/2011
