Vermont School District Settles Bullying Lawsuit

The Burlington, Vt., school district has agreed to settle a $25,000 bullying lawsuit with a former middle school student. The boy had his arm broken by a fellow student on a bus in 2010 and alleged in the lawsuit that the school "did not provide adequate supervision on the bus." As part of the settlement, the school will work to make presentations to students against bullying and harassment.

Scranton Student Bullied By Teacher, Suit Says

Parents of a former Scranton, Penn., student have filed a lawsuit against the school district, claiming their son was "repeatedly bullied and harassed" because he is black. The alleged abuse took place when the boy was in the second grade at the hands of his teacher, who "punished him more than white children with similar behavior in the class." Despite multiple meetings with the teacher and school officials, the parents said nothing was done to prevent further abuse.

Suit: Basketball Program Founder Abused Players

Three former players in the prestigious Riverside Church basketball program in New York have filed suit against the church, claiming program founder Ernest Lorch sexually abused them. In the suit, the players say that Lorch "assaulted them on the church’s Morningside Heights campus and during team trips" and that church officials failed "to properly supervise" the trips. The abuse has left the plaintiffs with severe emotional and psychological damages.

GM Recalls 145,000 Mid-Sized Trucks

General Motors has issued a recall of 145,000 pickup trucks after it was discovered that the vehicle hoods can fly open unexpectedly while driving. The recall covers Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks, model years 2010 through 2012. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said some of the trucks may have not be fitted with a second hood latch, which would prevent hoods from opening.

Hyundai Recalls 13,500 Veloster Compact Cars

Hyundai Motor Co has issued a recall of more than 13,000 2012 Veloster three-door compact cars due to faulty sunroofs that can break while the car is moving. The company said the "panoramic" sunroofs may have been weakened during manufacturing. There have been 11 complaints of sunroofs shattering or exploding in the 2012 models.

TV Show Settles Class-Action Intern Wage Lawsuit

Producers of the "Charlie Rose" show will pay $250,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by unpaid interns who claimed minimum wage violations. The interns in the suit said they were an integral part of the behind-the-scenes work for the show and should have been compensated like regular employees. The settlement will cover roughly 190 former interns, each of whom will receive about $1,100.

Dillard's Settles Sick Leave Lawsuit

Dillard's Inc. will pay $2 million to settle a class-action lawsuit filed by a group of workers who accused the company of forcing workers to disclose private medical conditions when requesting sick leave. The lawsuit stemmed from an alleged incident where an employee was fired for refusing to reveal her exact medical condition to her supervisor. This practice, the suit says, violates the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Suit over Death of Foster Child Can Proceed

A federal appeals court in Colorado has ruled that a wrongful death lawsuit against two Denver child protection workers can proceed. The lawsuit accuses the workers of failing to "investigate suspicions of abuse" leading up to the death of a 7-year-old boy from starvation. The boy died in May 2007 in the closet of his foster parents' home; he was 20 pounds underweight and severely dehydrated.

Family of Dead Cyclist Files Suit Against Driver

The death of a bicyclist in Kathleen, Ga., has prompted a lawsuit by the man's family against the driver of the car that hit him. The man was starting his morning bicycle ride in front of his home when he was hit by a van while coming out of his driveway. The suit accuses the defendant of "failing to keep a proper lookout, not exercising due care in operating a motor vehicle and violating the law by following too closely." The suit is seeking more than $75,000 in damages.

Family of Hit-and-Run Victim Files Lawsuit

A lawsuit has been filed in Orlando over the hit-and-run death of a local man in 2010. The family of the victim is seeking more than $15,000 in damages from the defendant, who has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the accident. The victim was walking down the sidewalk when the defendant swerved off the road and hit him, the lawsuit states.
