Harris County to Investigate Union Pacific Site in Over Cancer Cluster |

Harris County investigators will examine whether Union Pacific broke state environmental laws related to its management of contamination from a rail yard in northeast Houston after a cancer cluster was identified in Kashmere Gardens and Fifth Ward neighborhoods. The Commissioners Court approved the County Attorney's request to consider legal action against the multi-billion-dollar transportation company and hire an expert to inspect the Englewood Rail Yard, where creosote, a probable carcinogen according to the EPA.

Two Texas Nonprofits File Suit Over Medicaid Contracts |

Community Health Choice and Community First Health are filing suit against Texas state officials alleging they were left out of a $10 billion health plan. The state announced it would grant the large sum to health plans that insure patients in Texas' privatized Medicaid system who are blind, disabled, or older than 65. However, the lawsuit alleges the Houston and San Antonio-area health plans, both of which operate as nonprofits, were left out despite high performance ratings.

Army Corps Found Liable for Flooding Damage |

U.S. Judge Charles F. Lettow ruled the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers was liable for damage caused by its decision to retain floodwaters upstream of the Addicks and Barker reservoirs during Hurricane Harvey, a move that caused severe and widespread flooding to homes and businesses on the far-west outreaches of the Houston region.

Ford Recalls 500,000 SuperCrew Vehicles Due to Interior Fire Risk |

Ford Motor Company has announced a safety recall of over 500,000 Ford Super Duty SuperCrew vehicles due to a post-crash interior fire risk. As stated in the recall, "excessive sparks may emerge due to a front seat-belt pretensioner which is deployed during a crash, igniting the carpet or carpet insulation." Affected vehicles were manufactured at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant from Oct 8, 2015-Oct 29, 2019, and distributed throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
