Johns Hopkins Prioritized Out-of-State Patients, Says Lawsuit

Johns Hopkins is facing a lawsuit alleging that it favored out-of-state patients over Maryland residents. The lawsuit was filed by a former supervisor in the patient appointments department, who says that the hospital prioritized certain patients in order to boost revenue. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court states the hospital directed its employees to bring in more out-of-state patients. Johns Hopkins has been accused of violating a clause in its budget agreement with the state that says hospitals can't deny services to patients for inappropriate financial reasons.

Dallas Jury Orders BBVA Compass to Pay $98M to Luxury Home Builder

A Dallas jury ordered BBVA Compass to pay more than $98 million to a developer of three luxury subdivisions in Tarrant County after determining the bank and one of its executives misled him on loan renewals for the projects. Jurors awarded the damages to developer David Bagwell and partnerships he formed to build million-dollar homes in the Broughton, Whittier Heights, and Old Grove subdivisions in Colleyville. The lawsuit grew out of Bagwell's efforts to modify loan terms for the projects during the 2008-2009 financial crisis and real estate downturn. Bagwell's legal team argued that BBVA Compass repeatedly told him his loans were being renewed, even as it negotiated to sell the loans at a discount to a competing developer.
