Homeowner Struck by Stray Bullet Awarded More Than $1M

A Dallas County jury awarded a Rowlett homeowner more than $1 million Thursday in a controversial gun range case. The homeowner, Mike Domin, was struck by a stray bullet while working in his backyard more than three years ago. The jury found James Day and the Garland Public Shooting Range negligent, and awarded the homeowner money for his pain and suffering, medical bills and anguish. Back in 2012, two other homes were hit by stray bullets. That year, the City of Rowlett sued the gun range, forcing the owner to make a number of safety improvements.

The city of Albuquerque, New Mexico has agreed to settle a lawsuit over the shooting death of a man who suffered from mental health and drug abuse issues. The lawsuit, filed by the man's father, alleges that a police officer shot the man while he was unarmed and holding his brother and brother's girlfriend hostage. The man had put down his weapon and come to the door, where he was shot in the chest and killed by an officer outside. This is not the first, but one of several cases in which the officer who shot the victim has shot unarmed suspects. The city has agreed to settle the case for $900,000.

Elite army athlete Megan Henry, who survived rampant blood clots in her 20s, is another. With major suits against NuvaRing’s manufacturer, Merck, headed for trial, Marie Brenner asks why, despite evidence of serious risk, a potentially lethal contraceptive remains on the market.
