Medical Cybercrime: The Next Frontier |
EMRs, electronic health records help streamline health care, minimize mistakes, and make—in most cases—the lives of patients and healthcare providers much easier. But they can also be stolen for credit card fraud or for healthcare theft. Healthcare theft is a growing criminal field, often tied to organized crime, in which uninsured patients use a stolen identity belong to another person for healthcare reasons. These include forged prescriptions for drugs, inpatient or outpatient care, or fraudulent healthcare lawsuits. According to the HIPAA records, nearly 21 million Americans have had their EMRs stolen or lost since 2009. NEAL UNGERLEIDER, Fast Company â?? Co.Exist 08/04/2015 |

Indiana Settles Suit Over Infant's Day Care Death |
The state of Indiana is settling a lawsuit over the death of a 5-month-old boy who died in the care of an unlicensed day care. The boy died in January 2013 and his death was ruled as "sudden unexpected infant death" with a contributing factor of "unsafe sleep environment on broken Pack and Play." His parents filed suit against the state and the day care providers alleging that they "knew or reasonably should have known" about the unsafe environment. The child had been placed in a broken crib with a large blanket in a room with no supervision or baby monitor. The state has agreed to pay $87,500 to settle the lawsuit. Proposal: Families of Newtown Victims Would Split $1.5M |
The families of more than a dozen victims of the Newtown school shooting rampage would split $1.5 million under proposed settlements of lawsuits against the estate of the gunman's mother. The lawsuits filed this year accuse Nancy Lanza of failing to properly secure her legally owned Bushmaster AR-15 rifle. Her troubled son, 20-year-old Adam, used the rifle to kill 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012, after he shot his mother to death at their Newtown home with another gun. The settlement proposals were disclosed in probate court documents filed Monday and first reported by The Hartford Courant. Associated Press, Houston Chronicle 08/04/2015 |

Taurus Gun Maker Agrees to Pistol Recall As Part of Settlement |
The manufacturer of Taurus pistols has issued a voluntary recall of almost a million of its firearms due to a risk of the guns inadvertently firing. The gun manufacturer agreed to the recall after a lawsuit was filed in 2013 over the defective guns. The lawsuit's settlement will affect those who purchased gun models sold between 1997 and 2013. Despite the settlement, Taurus has continued to deny that the guns have any design defect. Taurus discontinued the models included in the recent recall back in early 2013.
