Serious Nursing Home Abuse Often Not Reported To Police, Federal Investigators Find
spacer image
More than one-quarter of serious cases of nursing home abuse are not reported to the police, according to an alert released Monday morning by the Office of Inspector General in the Department of Health and Human Services. The cases went unreported despite the fact that state and federal law require that serious cases of abuse in nursing homes be turned over to the police. Government investigators are conducting an ongoing review into nursing home abuse and neglect but say they are releasing the alert now because they want immediate fixes. These are cases of abuse severe enough to send someone to the emergency room. One example cited in the alert is a woman who was left deeply bruised after being sexually assaulted at her nursing home.

Rush University Medical Center has filed a lawsuit against the company that provided a patient monitoring system that they say didn't work as promised and put patient safety at risk. The lawsuit was filed against Pennsylvania-based Draeger Inc., late last week in federal court in Chicago. The complaint alleges that the defendant put patient's lives at risk by failing to provide a working system for monitoring. According to the lawsuit, the medical center spent $18 million installing the Draeger system between 2012 and early 2016, but the system didn't work as anticipated. The lawsuit seeks compensation for the losses incurred by the hospital due to the failed system.

Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Filed Against Massage Envy
spacer image
A newly filed lawsuit by a female customer accuses a male masseur at a Clermont, Florida, location of the Massage Envy chain of sexual abuse. The woman claims that the man made a comment about how "he could rub her for six hours" and that he inappropriately touched her during her massage appointment. The woman's lawsuit claims that the chain's policies to not require police to be notified when a customer makes a complaint of this nature, "fosters an environment conducive to sexual misconduct."
