UT Study Finds South Texas Quakes Tied to Oil Production | | Small earthquakes in South Texas’ burgeoning Eagle Ford Shale probably result from producing lots of oil and associated water, rather than from hydraulic fracturing, says a new study by Cliff Frohlich, associate director of the Institute for Geophysics at the University of Texas at Austin. That’s in contrast to a study last year by Frohlich and colleagues at the institute, which found that earthquakes in the Barnett Shale were likely caused by injecting waste water deep underground. Much of that waste water is fluid that flows back to the surface after being used for hydraulic fracturing. Jim Fuquay, Star Telegram 08/27/2013 | Read Article: Star Telegram |
Fire Marshal: Inspections Refused Since West blast | | Five facilities in Texas with large quantities of the same fertilizer chemical that fueled the deadly plant explosion in West have turned away state fire marshal inspectors since the blast, investigators said Monday. A railway operator that hauls hazardous materials across Texas was also said to have rebuffed a state request to share data since the April explosion at West Fertilizer Co. that killed 15 people and injured 200 others. The company denied that Monday. Regulators and state lawmakers at a hearing about the still-unsolved explosion were intrigued by the lack of cooperation. PAUL J.
