Ex-Baylor Doctor Found Guilty of Raping Patient at Ben Taub Hospital |
|
A Houston jury Thursday convicted a former Baylor College of Medicine physician, Dr. Shafeeq Sheikh, of raping a woman who had been hospitalized at Ben Taub Hospital for an acute asthma attack in 2013. The woman reported the rape to Ben Taub staff, saying an unknown physician came to her bedside three times in the dark, sexually assaulting her while she was tethered to machines. The call button she repeatedly pressed to summon a nurse was unplugged. But it took investigators two years to identify Dr. Shafeeq Sheikh as the suspected attacker, based on DNA from her rape kit.

Colonial Pipeline is facing another lawsuit over a deadly explosion that took place in Shelby County, Alabama. The explosion, which occurred in 2016, resulted in the deaths of two workers and injuries to four others. The most recent lawsuit was filed by the widow of one of the men killed in the explosion. It alleges the defendants, Colonial and Superior Land Designs, LLC, were negligent in their responsibilities to maintain worker safety in the fatal incident, and for "fostering a culture whereby unsafe practices were not reported or stopped, and were allowed to proceed in order to expedite work."
