Uncertain Future for Houston Toxic River Dump
spacer image
Removing industrial waste from a 14-acre Superfund site on the San Jacinto River could be just as dangerous as leaving it in place, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers suggested in a report published Monday. Harris County has fought three companies over the pollution for years, and the state is considering whether there is a link between elevated cancer rates in the area and the waste that fouled the river for decades. The companies have suggested the much-cheaper alternative - leaving the sludge buried in pits capped by membranes and rocks - is enough to protect the public. But the county and some cancer-plagued residents say the gunk has got to go.

Lawsuit Alleges Illegal Use of Sperm Donation in Texas
spacer image
A Texas man has filed a lawsuit alleging that his ex-girlfriend illegally used one of his donations from a sperm bank to conceive a child. While the man and another woman were a couple, the man preserved his sperm before a vasectomy procedure. The couple had a child together before the procedure and thought they may decide to have more children later. The man's sperm was preserved for the sole use of his then-girlfriend. After the couple broke up, however, the man's new girlfriend used his sperm from the bank to conceive a child. The woman who used the sperm is now facing a lawsuit alleging that she obtained the sperm intended only for the use of the man's first partner without permission.
