Fatal Distracted Driving Crashes Up |
|
Distracted driving crashes in Travis County increased 12 percent from 2016 to 2017, according to AAA Texas. Dallas and Harris Counties experienced larger year-to-year increases--Dallas County increased 20 percent, while Harris County, which covers the Houston area, shot up 62 percent. AAA Texas says distracted driving is an epidemic in the state and across the nation, and kills an average of nine people and injures 1,000 each day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Supreme Court Allows Youth Climate Change Lawsuit to Proceed |

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that a lawsuit filed by 21 youth plaintiffs against the government over climate change can move forward. The lawsuit alleges that the government's affirmative actions caused climate change, violated the youngest generation's constitutional rights to life, liberty, and property. Additionally, the complaint alleges that the government failed to protect essential public trust resources. The Supreme Court has denied the Trump administration's application for stay and affirmed the October 29, 2018 trial date.

Southwest Airlines Facing PTSD Lawsuit by Passenger on Fatal Flight |
|
A passenger on the Southwest Airlines flight from New York to Dallas that suffered a mid-air engine blowout has filed suit against the airline. The plaintiff, who was on board the April 17 flight in which a woman was killed when she was partially sucked out of a window, alleges he suffered Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other related problems as a result of the incident. The lawsuit filed in New York against Southwest Airlines seeks compensation for emotional and physical pain as well as lost wages.
