The lakes have been granted Superfund status â?? a designation given to the countryâ??s most hazardous sites â?? as officials try to figure out how to clean them up. Though the Donna system supplies drinking water for two nearby small cities, environmental researchers have found the water itself to be safe. The problem is the fish, which are somehow ingesting cancer-causing chemicals and retaining them in their fat tissue. For decades, officials have been stumped over the source of the chemicals. Hospital Settles "Patient Dumping" Lawsuit for $450K | | The Good Samaritan Hospital of Los Angeles is scheduled to pay a $450,000 settlement in a lawsuit alleging that it discharged and dumped a homeless patient. The lawsuit alleges that in December 2014, the hospital discharged the plaintiff "without obtaining the personâ??s consent to be transported somewhere other than a residence." The patient was dropped off in Echo Park after being discharged from the hospital. Because hospital staff did not provide a discharge plan, the patient was put in an environment which endangered his health, the lawsuit alleges. California law dictates that physicians must have a discharge plan for their patients. Reynolds to the children of a heavy smoker who died of lung disease, saying the tobacco company hid the dangers of cigarettes from her until she was hopelessly addicted. The case against R.J. Reynolds centered on the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease death of smoker Virginia Wilkinson. The verdict included $10 million in punitive damages awarded Friday morning, and $3 million in compensatory damages awarded a day earlier.
