Guardrail Maker Is Said to Be Focus of U.S. Case

The Justice Department has begun a criminal investigation of the guardrail maker Trinity Industries and is examining the company's relationship with the Federal Highway Administration, according to people with knowledge of the effort. At least five potential witnesses, including one former federal highway agency official, have been interviewed in recent weeks by investigators, and at least one grand jury subpoena for documents has been issued, according to the people.

Quicken Loans Sued by U.S. Justice Department

The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against Quicken Loans alleging that the mortgage lender knowingly submitted or caused the submission of claims for hundreds of improperly written loans. According to the lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., Quicken Loans improperly originated and underwrote mortgages insured by the Federal Housing Administration from September 2007 to December 2011. The lawsuit alleges that Quicken Loans encouraged its employees to disregard FHA rules and falsely certify compliance with underwriting requirements to obtain profit. Quicken denied any wrongdoing and last week filed a lawsuit against the government alleging that its practices were proper and legal.

Columbia Student Cleared of Rape Charge Files Suit Against School

A lawsuit has been filed against Columbia University in New York City by a student who was accused of rape by a fellow student. The lawsuit was filed by the student who was later cleared of responsibility in the rape of another student. According to the plaintiff, he was the victim of a harassment campaign by the female student who accused him of rape. The lawsuit names as defendants the school, its president, and one of its professors. The lawsuit was filed in Federal District Court in Manhattan and seeks damages to be determined at trial.

Michael Brown's Family Files Wrongful Death Lawsuit Against City

The family of slain 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was killed by a police officer last year in Ferguson, Missouri, has filed a lawsuit against the city. The family filed the lawsuit on Thursday and allege that the police officer violated the civil rights of the young man and that the city's law enforcement practices "led directly to the unjustified killing." The police officer who shot Brown was cleared by a grand jury in November and last month he was cleared of civil rights violations by the Justice Department. The wrongful death lawsuit names the city of Ferguson, former police chief the police officer who shot Brown as the defendants.
