Azle Earthquakes Likely Caused by Oil and Gas Operations, Study Says
spacer image
Oil and gas operations are the most likely cause of dozens of earthquakes that began rattling the North Texas towns of Azle and Reno in November 2013, a group of scientists has concluded. The study, led by researchers at SMU and published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, presents some of the most conclusive evidence yet that humans are shifting faults below Dallas-Fort Worth that have not budged in hundreds of millions of years. The new findings contradict statements by the Railroad Commission of Texas that there are no definitive links between oil and gas activity and earthquakes in the state.

Attorneys for Ebola Nurse Nina Pham, Texas Health Resources Face Off

State District Judge Martin Hoffman issued a temporary restraining order after a brief hearing. A full hearing where witnesses will likely be called will be held within 14 days. No date has been set. At issue is whether Hoffman's court or the court that would hear the worker's compensation claim has jurisdiction. The worker's compensation court would have to determine whether Nina Pham was an employee of Presbyterian, THR or both. Pham's attorneys said that THR waited until after Pham's lawsuit was filed to pursue worker's compensation.

Pfizer Wins First of 1,000 Suits Claiming Antidepressant Zoloft Link to Birth Defects

Jurors in state court in St. Louis Friday rejected arguments that Pfizer should be held liable for Logyn Pesante's heart abnormalities. The boy's family sought compensation for three surgeries to deal with his multiple defects and having a pacemaker involved a month after his birth. The case was the first against Pfizer to go to trial over claims officials knew Zoloft, once the U.S.'s most-prescribed antidepressant, could cause birth defects and failed to update safety warnings to protect billions of dollars in sales. The company faces similar suits in federal and state courts in Philadelphia seeking damages for children born with congenital defects

Blue Bell Issues Sweeping Recall
spacer image
Brenham-based Blue Bell Creameries is pulling all of its products from the shelves after more ice cream samples tested positive for a life-threatening bacterial infection. The voluntary decision, announced Monday, is the latest and most sweeping development to plague the Texas business icon since a recall last month, the first in the company's 108-year history. The company announced the first recall March 13 after ice cream made by Blue Bell Creameries was linked to the deaths of three hospital patients in Kansas. Almost every other week since then, Blue Bell has had to deal with another recall or a store withdrawing product from shelves.
