The 16-year-old girl died from smoke and soot inhalation in the fire that took place when the bus became stuck in a ditch. The wrongful death complaint was filed Wednesday in Pottawattamie County District Court and alleges wrongful death, severe emotional distress and negligent hiring, training and supervision of the bus driver. It seeks damages for the loss of the girl's companionship, earnings and services, for funeral expenses and for her pain and suffering as well as her mother's emotional distress.
