West Virginia Opioid Lawsuit Transferred to Federal Court | | An opioid lawsuit filed by several municipalities in West Virginia against 14 pharmacy companies has been moved to federal court. On Monday, attorneys representing the pharmacies filed a notice of removal in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. The defendants' attorneys claimed that the case should be joined with others of its kind as a class action suit in federal court. The lawsuit accusing the companies of negligence, gross negligence and reckless and willful conduct in distributing opioid medications was originally filed in Kanawha County Circuit Court on March 14. Iowa Teen Dies in Bus Fire, Parents File Suit Against School District | | The parents of an Iowa teen who was killed in a school bus fire have filed suit against the Riverside Community School District. The 16-year-old girl died from smoke and soot inhalation in the fire that took place when the bus became stuck in a ditch. The wrongful death complaint was filed Wednesday in Pottawattamie County District Court and alleges wrongful death, severe emotional distress and negligent hiring, training and supervision of the bus driver. It seeks damages for the loss of the girl's companionship, earnings and services, for funeral expenses and for her pain and suffering as well as her mother's emotional distress.
