Suit: Black Men Forced to Change Clothes by Airline

Two African-American men have filed suit against US Airways, alleging they were forced to change out of their blue jeans and hoodie sweatshirts before being allowed to sit in their first-class seats. The suit says other white and Hispanic passengers were allowed into first class in similar dress. The airline, however, says the two men were flying on "buddy passes" from an airline employee, which comes with a specific dress code.

Intuitive’s First Robot-Surgery Trial to Probe Training

Intuitive Surgical Inc., a maker of surgical robots used in more than 300,000 U.S. operations last year, faces its first trial over claims it marketed the devices to doctors without providing adequate training. A state court jury in Port Orchard, Washington, is scheduled to hear opening arguments as early as today about whether Intuitive properly trained a physician who, in his first unassisted surgery using the company’s da Vinci surgical system, removed the prostate gland of a patient who later died.

Colorado Jury Finds Helmet Maker Riddell Negligent

spacer image

A Colorado jury in a lawsuit brought by the family of a severely injured high school football player has found that helmet maker Riddell was negligent in failing to warn players about concussion dangers. Saturday's ruling comes as the company faces a similar lawsuit in Los Angeles, plus a complaint by thousands of former NFL players against the league and Riddell. The jury awarded $11.5 million to the family of Rhett Ridolfi, who suffered a concussion during practice at Trinidad High School in 2008. Ridolfi, now 22, wasn't immediately taken to the hospital and now has severe brain damage, as well as paralysis on his left side.

Elderly Patients Routinely Prescribed Risky Drugs

spacer image

Doctors in the United States routinely prescribe potentially harmful drugs to older patients, and the problem is particularly acute in the South, a new study shows. The analysis found that more than one in five seniors on Medicare in the South were prescribed medications that health authorities have specifically advised doctors to avoid giving to older patients because of their severe side effects. Compared with people 65 and older living in New England, those living in the southern region from Texas to South Carolina were about 12 percent more likely to be prescribed a high-risk medication.

$3 Million Awarded in Medical Malpractice Suit

An Alabama jury has awarded $3 million to the widow of a man who died in 2008 due to an infected gallbladder. In the lawsuit, the woman claimed her husband's doctors determined early on that he needed his gallbladder removed, but that the surgeon repeatedly delayed surgery for "various unjustified reasons." The victim first was admitted to the hospital on Nov. 22, 2008 and was "repeatedly admitted and discharged" before dying in the hospital on December 25.

A lawsuit has been filed over the suicide over a 15-year-old girl in San Jose, Calif., who killed herself after allegedly being raped by classmates at a party in September.
