Highlands Residents Waiting for Answers About Cancer Concerns
spacer image
Each year, state and local officials across the United States receive about 1,000 reports of potential cancer clusters. Most are based in perception rather than fact, experts say. Someone gets cancer, or a loved one gets cancer, and then people start talking about other neighbors with cancer. That started years ago in Highlands, a town of 7,000 that sits above the eastern bank of the San Jacinto River. Most of the talk focused on the children.

PayPal May Face Lawsuit Over "Bill Me Later" Service
spacer image
PayPal may be facing a lawsuit by the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau over its "Bill Me Later" service. The bureau has begun requesting information from Ebay, the parent company, about PayPal's lending system that allows customers to purchase items and pay for them later, according to a regulatory filing on Thursday. The investigation could lead to a lawsuit, which may cause PayPal to change its business practices or undisclosed fines, penalties, legal fees and payments to customers.

G.M. Deems Steering Issue Unworthy of Recall
spacer image
As awareness grew last year of General Motors' failure to disclose a dangerous defect in millions of older cars, its executives had a clear message for the public: Safety was G.M.'s first priority. By the end of the year, G.M. had recalled a record number of vehicles ' 30 million in North America ' and overhauled its safety practices. But the company's handling of a recent steering issue sheds new light on where G.M., and regulators, draw the line at what constitutes a safety issue worthy of a recall.

Takata Air Bag on Honda Civic Linked to Another Injury
spacer image
Faulty air bags supplied by Takata Corp have been linked to another injury involving a Honda Motor Co car in Florida in March. A 2003 model Honda Civic's airbag exploded and a piece of metal shot out from the bag into the driver's neck, according to police and hospital reports. The shrapnel was removed after an emergency surgery, hospital records showed. The report said "an airbag deployed sending foreign body toward patient." The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it has not yet been confirmed that the accident involved an airbag rupture.

Fears Over Roundup Herbicide Residues Prompt Private Testing
spacer image
U.S. consumer groups, scientists and food companies are testing substances ranging from breakfast cereal to breast milk for residues of the world's most widely used herbicide on rising concerns over its possible links to disease. The focus is on glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup. Testing has increased in the last two years, but scientists say requests spiked after a World Health Organization research unit said last month it was classifying glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans."

Texas Medical Board Votes to Curtail Telemedicine
spacer image
The Texas Medical Board voted Friday to severely restrict the practice of telemedicine in Texas, requiring physicians to conduct an in-person visit with a patient before providing a diagnosis or prescribing drugs by phone or video. The rules would allow telemedicine without a prior visit if a patient is at a health facility, such as a hospital, clinic or even a pharmacy, and has another healthcare professional with them. Mental health visits are excluded from the rules.

Second Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against SeaWorld
spacer image
A second class action lawsuit has been filed over SeaWorld's alleged deceptive marketing of the treatment of its whales. This suit was filed by a South Carolina resident who purchased a $97 ticket in December 2013. A similar lawsuit was filed in California in March and targeted the SeaWorld locations in San Diego and San Antonio. The recently-filed lawsuit specifically names the Florida SeaWorld location. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff "relied on a false understanding of the conditions and treatment of SeaWorld's orcas, given SeaWorld's omission of fact regarding the treatment, longevity and well-being of the orcas."
