Suit: Florist Discriminated Against Gay Couple

The state of Washington has filed suit against a local florist who refused to sell flowers to a same-sex couple for their wedding. The lawsuit says the florist violated state consumer protection laws and seeks $2,000 fines for each violation. Businesses in Washington are currently prohibited from discriminating against consumers on the basis of sexual orientation.

Former 911 Dispatchers Settle Harassment Suits

Two former 911 dispatchers in Delaware County, Okla., have settled separate lawsuits with the county over claims of sexual harassment and retaliation. The lawsuit claimed supervisor Don Murphy created a working environment ripe with "inappropriate sexual behaviors" and harassment. The settlement totaled just over $117,000 combined between the two plaintiffs.

Suit Targets Illegal Gambling Room in Houston

A lawsuit has been filed against a game room in Houston where a security guard was shot last weekend. The lawsuit claims the Treasure Island Club runs a dangerous gambling operation that has been repeatedly investigated by local authorities. The large amounts of cash on hand "attract criminal activity," the lawsuit says, which creates a dangerous situation for customers and neighbors.

Suit: Students Abused at Deaf Academy

Two former employees have filed a whistleblower lawsuit against the National Deaf Academy near Orlando, alleging patients have been subjected to abuse and neglect and academy officials have covered it up. The suit claims workers at the academy purposely injured patients during forced takedowns and that patient rooms were filthy and bug-infested. The center has already been cited for almost 100 violations this year by the state Agency for Health Care Administration.

Suit: Bullying Led to Girl's Suicide

A woman in central Texas has filed a lawsuit against the Leander school district over the suicide of her daughter in 2011. The lawsuit claims the girl was bullied at school to the point of depression, and that school officials did nothing to halt the abuse. The mother is demanding the district implement a "third party anti-bullying program" to educate students and faculty.

Judge Denies New Trial in $91.5M Nursing Home Verdict

A judge has denied a new trial in an elderly neglect case that resulted in a $91.5 million jury verdict against Heartland of Charleston nursing home's billion-dollar parent company. Kanawha County Circuit Judge Paul Zakaib Jr. issued a long-awaited ruling Wednesday, finding that the massive damage award was appropriately scaled to punish Heartland's corporate owner, HCR Manor Care, for what the judge called a history of intentionally short-staffing nursing homes to maximize profit.

Airbag Issue Prompts Toyota, Honda, Nissan Recall

Toyota, Honda and Nissan have issued a recall of a combined three million vehicles over defective airbag inflators. According to Toyota, the inflators can cause car airbags to deploy "abnormally" during a crash. There have been five incidents of malfunctions, but no injuries or accidents were reported.
