ABA Considers Tossing LSAT Requirement, Disagreement Ensues
spacer image
The American Bar Association is holding a public hearing April 12 on a proposed change to its law school standards that would drop the requirement that schools use the Law School Admission Test when selecting students. Proponents and opponents of the change have already laid out their arguments in written comments submitted before the hearing, and the legal academy appears markedly split on the issue. Unsurprisingly, the organizations behind both standardized tests are at odds over whether the ABA’s Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar should eliminate the LSAT rule.

In an April 4 ruling, U.S. District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez awarded former law school student Jane Doe $450,000 for her copyright infringement claims; $3 million in compensatory damages for intentional infliction of emotional distress claims.

Newspaper: Pilots Warned of Harness Dangers Before Helicopter Crash that Killed Two Dallas Friends
spacer image
Pilots who work for the helicopter company involved in a deadly crash in New York that killed two Dallas friends last month issued warnings about equipment that could make escape difficult, The New York Times reported. One pilot said "we are setting ourselves up for failure" in helicopters outfitted with harnesses that didn't fit properly. The family of Trevor Cadigan, a former Dallas-based journalist, filed a lawsuit in March claiming Cadigan was unable to escape from his seat on the Eurocopter AS350B2 because of the harness he was cinched into.

Husband Files Lawsuit After Wife is Killed in Home Explosion

The husband of the woman killed in the March 27 house explosion in Tech Terrace shared his memories of the event that killed his wife, as he and his attorney announced a wrongful death lawsuit on Monday. According to the lawsuit, the Gelcas saw bright flashes coming from their neighbors' house and the house was engulfed in flames. The lawsuit says the Gelcas grabbed a water hose to slow the spread of the fire when a large explosion happened at their neighbors' home. A gas cylinder flew from the house, striking Rodica, killing her. Razvan was also struck by flying debris. After the fire, multiple large gas cylinders littered the neighboring yard.

FDA Restricts Sales of a Bayer's Essure Birth Control Device
spacer image
The Food and Drug Administration moved Monday to put sales restrictions on a Bayer birth control implant that has been a target of consumer criticism. The FDA said the Essure contraceptive device could only be sold to doctors who provide patients with detailed risk and benefits information. In order for Bayer to sell Essure to those healthcare providers, the providers must first agree to go through a comprehensive FDA-sanctioned brochure and checklist with patients.
