Former Hooters Waitress Files Lawsuit

A Missouri woman who was formerly a waitress at Hooters has filed a suit against the restaurant, alleging she was forced to quit after having brain surgery. The lawsuit claimed one of the restaurant managers forced the plaintiff to wear a wig when she returned to work, which was "uncomfortable and interfered with the healing of her scar." The suit accuses the company of violating the state's Human Rights Act.

Suit Settled over Fire Pot Explosion, Burns

A settlement has been reached in a lawsuit filed by a man who was badly burned when a decorative fire pot exploded in front of him in 2011. The plaintiff suffered severe burns over 14 percent of his body, but has recovered. The settlement, split between the maker of the fire pot, the maker of the fire gel, and the retailer who sold the product, amounted to about $225,000.

NFL, Ex-Players Set for Pa. Federal Court Battle

A hearing Tuesday over concussion litigation filed against the NFL promises to be a contest between legal lions. About 4,200 former players have sued the league. Some suffer from dementia, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological problems. Others simply want their health monitored. The players’ lawyers accuse the NFL of promoting violence in the game and concealing known cognitive risks from concussions and other blows to the head. They hope to keep the litigation in federal court so they can use the discovery process to access NFL files — and see what the league knew when.

Ocean Springs Sisters Win Katrina Lawsuit Against State Farm

A federal jury has found that State Farm Fire and Casualty Co. avoided covering a policyholder's wind losses by blaming the damage on storm surge, which is covered by federal flood insurance. The verdict came Monday in a whistleblower lawsuit filed against the insurer over its handling of Hurricane Katrina claims. State Farm is expected to appeal.

City Settles Harassment Suit with Police Officer

The city of Millbrook, Ala., has settled a lawsuit with a female police officer who claims she was sexually harassed by a co-worker. The plaintiff says she was harassed by a male sergeant and, when she reported the incident, was subjected to "unwarranted disciplinary actions" and was eventually terminated. The monetary terms of the settlement were undisclosed.
