Barge Pilot Blamed for March 2019 Crash |
|
The March
15, 2019 crash between the Dixie Vandal towing vessel and the docked Trinity
towing vessel and an attached barge spilled a half-gallon of jet fuel into the
channel and caused $630,000 in damage, officials with the National
Transportation Safety Board said in a report, released Thursday. In their
report, investigators said the pilot â??on the Dixie Vandal told investigators
that he believed he had dozed off in the seconds before striking the Trinity

Life-or-Death
Hospital Decisions May Come With Lawsuits |
|
Health
care providers may prioritize patients without underlying conditions who are
likeliest to make a full recovery, but thereâ??s no national standard for
triage. The question of withholding or withdrawing ventilators from the
sickest patients is so charged that medical experts have encouraged providers
to develop their own guidelines. Like the U.S. pandemic response itself, itâ??s
largely a state-by-state and, to some extent, hospital-by-hospital
patchwork.

Centuries-Old
Laws May Shield the Cruise Industry |
|
Experts
and fellow attorneys said they face an uphill battle against restrictive terms
of service buried in passengersâ?? paperwork and maritime laws that predate the
sinking of the Titanic by half a century. Nearly all legal cases are limited
to losses related to physical injuries, not emotional or psychological damage.
The Death on the High Seas Act, first passed in the 1920s and updated only
once since, prevents survivors from suing for their emotional distress or pain
and suffering even when a loved one dies on a ship at sea.

Plaintiffs
in Baylor Title IX Lawsuit Can't Seek Punitive Damages |
|
A federal
judge hearing a Title IX lawsuit against Baylor University has ruled that 15
Jane Doe plaintiffs are not entitled to seek punitive damages or changes
impacting the schoolâ??s current or future policies concerning Title IX
enforcement. The ruling by U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman allows plaintiffs
in the four-year-old case to continue to seek claims against Baylor for actual
and compensatory damages and other costs, based on their allegations that
Baylor acted with deliberate indifference when they sought help after being
sexually assaulted by fellow students.
