A judge in Santa Clara County, California has ruled that a lawsuit alleging a salmonella outbreak at a Modesto hospital may proceed. The lawsuit was filed by the mother of a child who allegedly contracted the disease while at Doctors Medical Center of Modesto. The hospital sought the dismissal of the lawsuit, but the Santa Clara County judge found there was conflicting evidence from experts on how the young girl contracted salmonella at the Modesto hospital two years ago. The lawsuit seeks $50,000 for medical expenses and up to $250,000 for pain and suffering.

Lawsuit: Black Students Expelled for Making Rap Videos

spacer image

A group of parents from Ohio have filed a lawsuit after their children were expelled from high school for making a rap video. The lawsuit, filed on Tuesday, alleges that the school discriminated against the students, who are black, because of their race. The lawsuit contends that on April 10, the students were interrogated about their posts on social media, including rap videos they appeared in. The students were expelled from school because the school claimed that the students had used gang signs in the video. The lawsuit seeks $25,000 in damages and to remove the expulsions from their student records.

A lawsuit over "cruel and inhumane" medical treatment at a jail in Riverside County, California has gained class action status. This week, a U.S. District Court Judge ruled that the lawsuit could proceed as class action, expanding the lawsuit beyond the original seven plaintiffs. The lawsuit was filed by current or former inmates of the jail who allege the jail "violated their constitutional rights by under-staffing medical positions in jails and having policies that discouraged them from seeking proper care." The lawsuit was originally filed in March 2013.

The family of a 10-year-old boy who was killed at an Alabama airport last year has settled their lawsuit over his death. The boy was killed at the airport in Birmingham when a large display sign fell on top of him. The family reached a settlement with the airport on Wednesday and says they intend to use the money to start a foundation in the boy's name. The foundation, they say, is "intended to help carry forth his name and love for life." The terms of the settlement have been kept confidential.
