A South Dakota mother has filed a lawsuit after an incident where her 8-year-old daughter was hit with a Taser stun gun by police officers. The incident took place when a babysitter called police fearing that the young girl was going to harm herself with a knife. When police responded and the girl failed to drop the knife, police hit her with the Taser, which threw her against the wall. The lawsuit alleges excessive force and names as defendants the city of Pierre, the police chief and four police officers. The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages for the alleged excessive force and violation of the child's rights.

Family Sues After Sex Offender Responds to DirecTV Service Call

A Collin County family made a call to DirecTV for service on their DVR in August 2012. They say DirecTV should be held responsible for who came to their home. Two men responded to the call. One is named Wahren Scott Massey a registered sex offender in the state of TX since 1998. While DirecTV claims Massey was never an employee, he did go to the call with a subcontracted installer. The lawsuit states the father took the man Massey was with upstairs to point out where repairs were needed. A 12-year-old daughter caught Massey taking photos of her on his cell phone.

GM Issues Third Recall on SUVs That Can Catch Fire

spacer image

The recall covers about 189,000 vehicles in North America, mainly from the 2006 and 2007 model years. Models affected include the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, Buick Rainier, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 97-X. The problem, revealed in documents posted by federal safety regulators this week, is so serious that GM is telling customers to park the SUVs outdoors until they are repaired because they could catch fire when left unattended. The vehicles will be left outside for a while. Parts won't be ready until October at the earliest, according to GM. The automaker also has ordered its dealers to stop selling the SUVs as used cars until they are fixed.

Mother Files Suit Over Death of SIU Student

spacer image

The mother of a student at Southern Illinois University who was found dead in the woods in February has filed a lawsuit against the driver who allegedly gave the student a ride after a party. The first autopsy report concluded that the boy died of hypothermia, but a second autopsy report requested by the family revealed that the boy had sustained four different blows to the face and head. The lawsuit alleges that the 19-year-old student was beaten to death by the driver who, when questioned by police, reportedly told them that "he had given a ride to someone who later wandered into the woods." The driver was neither arrested nor charged. The lawsuit seeks $1 million from the driver and compensation from the city of Carbondale and its police chief.
