Family of Boy who Died at Lake Conroe Files Suit |
The family of an 8-year-old boy who died after slipping from a private resort's dock into Lake Conroe have sued the company that operates the resort. The lawsuit alleges that the company, Dallas-based Silverleaf Resorts, Inc., was negligent in its maintenance of the dock and liable for Andrew Orvis' death on July 20 because the dock "posed an unreasonable risk of harm." The suit notes that city inspectors found exposed live wiring on the dock at Piney Shores Resort two days after Orvis' death and that mechanisms that were supposed to prevent or shut off electricity to the dock in the event of a change in the current were malfunctioning. Va. Pays $200K to Settle Mistaken Alcohol Arrest |
The state of Virginia has agreed to pay over $200,000 to settle a $40 million lawsuit that was filed by a college student who was arrested when officers mistook her sparkling water purchase for alcohol. The underage girl was arrested by Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control agents after they mistook her case of sparkling water for beer as she was leaving a grocery store in Charlottesville, Virginia. The lawsuit alleged that the plainclothes officers violated the plaintiff's constitutional rights and used excessive force when they surrounded her car in the parking lot of the grocery store and arrested her.
