Lawsuit Filed Over Pastor Killed by Deputies During Drug Bust | | A lawsuit has been filed by the widow of a Georgia pastor who was shot to death by sheriff's deputies. The pastor met with a woman that the police were investigating and planning to arrest on drug charges that day. When plain-clothes officers moved in on his car thinking he was her drug source, the pastor believed that he was being robbed. He began to drive away and was subsequently shot and killed by one of the deputies. The lawsuit filed by the pastor's wife alleges excessive use of deadly force, assault, battery and false arrest. Brain-Injured Woman Awarded $16 Million in MTA Lawsuit | | A 69-year-old woman from the Bronx, N.Y. has been awarded $16 million in her lawsuit against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority after suffering brain damage when she slipped and fell on a flight of subway stairs. The woman was on her way home from work in December 2008 when a gouge in one of the stair steps caused her to trip and fall. She suffered a broken hip and bleeding on the brain as a result of the incident. Since her brain injury, the woman has had seizures, difficulty communicating and requires 24-hour care. Exonerated Man Files Suit Against the City of Chicago | | A Chicago man has filed a federal lawsuit against the city after serving two decades in prison for a double murder he did not commit. The plaintiff was exonerated and released from prison last June after it was determined that he could not have committed the murders due to being in custody at the time. The lawsuit alleges that police officers physically coerced a confession out of the plaintiff and fabricated evidence after learning he could not have committed the murders. Remote Helicopters Recalled Due to Injury Hazard | | Horizon Hobby has issued a recall on Blade 500 X BNF and Blade 500 3D RTF and BNF Remote Controlled Model Helicopters due to an injury hazard. "The tail rotor grip used for securing the tail rotor blade to the tail rotor hub can separate and release from the helicopter, posing a risk of a crash and injury hazard," the recall states. Safety Agency Says 22 Million Vehicles Recalled in 2013 | | For the second year in a row, Toyota led the nation with the most vehicles recalled: nearly 5.3 million in 2013. Chrysler Group ranked second, with almost 4.7 million vehicles recalled in 36 actions. The automaker's recalls included about 1.6 million 1993-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-7 Jeep Liberty models because N.H.T.S.A. said there was a danger of fires in rear-impact crashes. Honda and its Acura brand were third, with 15 recalls involving almost 2.8 million vehicles. Hyundai took fourth with nine recalls affecting 2.2 million vehicles. Ford came in fifth with 16 recalls of almost 1.2 million vehicles. Kia was sixth, recalling nearly 1.1 million vehicles in three recalls. Recalls by other automakers were below one million vehicles. General Motors was ninth, with 23 recalls affecting about 758,000 vehicles. Among the major automakers, Mercedes had the best record, with 747 vehicles recalled in four actions. Wrongful Death Lawsuit over Meningitis Outbreak Settled | | A $25 million wrongful death lawsuit has been settled between a Roanoke, Virginia medical clinic and the family of a man who died of meningitis in September 2012. The man had received a steroid shot that was contaminated with meningitis at the clinic. The lawsuit alleges that the clinic told patients that they were getting a name brand drug, but a generic substitute was used. Sixty-four people contracted meningitis during the outbreak which was linked to a Massachusetts pharmacy that later declared bankruptcy. The lawsuit was settled for an undisclosed amount.
