EPA: North Texas Earthquakes Likely Linked to Oil and Gas Drilling |
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency “there is a significant possibility” that recent earthquakes in North Texas are linked to oil and gas activity, even if state regulators won’t say so. Scientists have known for decades that injecting fluid deep underground could trigger earthquakes, and a growing body of research has linked disposal wells to seismicity in Texas and other states, which has grown more frequent. GM Asks Texas Court to Dismiss Ignition-Switch Lawsuit |
General Motors (GM) is seeking the dismissal of an ignition-switch lawsuit filed in Texas. The ignition-switch defect cited in the lawsuit led to a costly 2014 recall of 2.6 million small cars. The lawsuit was filed by the family of a man who was involved in a fatal car crash when his car hit another vehicle. GM has asked a Texas judge to dismiss the lawsuit and sanction the plaintiffs for fabricating evidence. Attorneys for GM say that the plaintiffs lied about the key chain the man was using during the crash, which could have led to the ignition-switch error. Greg Gardner, Detroit Free Press08/22/2016 |

Health Firms Label Fatalities As 'Injuries,' Investigation Reveals |
An investigation has revealed that "more than 4,000 patient deaths have been classified as less serious events in FDA safety reports." The investigation conducted by the I-Team and CNBC showed that many health firms have labeled fatalities as "injuries." According to the investigation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has allowed health firms to make their own determinations on causality, which has led to fatalities being classified as less serious injuries. In one case, a patient's death after falling out of a hospital safety bed was labeled as a bed manufacturer labeled the incident a "malfunction." New Jersey High Court Moves Paralyzed Man's Lawsuit Against Water Park Forward |
The New Jersey Supreme Court will allow a partially paralyzed man's lawsuit against a water park to proceed. The lawsuit was filed against Sahara Sam's water park after the plaintiff was seriously injured while attempting to surf at one of the parks attractions. The civil lawsuit was filed in Camden County Superior Court and accused the water park of gross negligence for failing to instruct the plaintiff on how to safely surf. The high court reversed two lower court rulings, stating that "a rational factfinder could conclude that the proximate cause of plaintiff's injuries was the gross negligence of Sahara Sam's."
