Georgia Man Settles with Cobb County Police

The police department in Cobb County, Ga., has agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by a local Latino man who claimed he was targeted in a traffic stop and arrested because he looked like an illegal immigrant. The plaintiff was riding his bike when stopped by two police officers, who questioned him about his identity, the suit claims. The man was allegedly beaten and punched in the face, resulting in a broken nose. He will receive $32,500 as part of the settlement.  Andria Simmons , Atlanta Journal-Constitution  05/18/2011

Suit to be Filed over Arizona Medicaid Cuts

A lawsuit will be filed against the state of Arizona over the legislature's proposed cuts to Medicaid. If passed in the legislature, the state would freeze or eliminate coverage for childless adults enrolled in the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System. The lawsuit claims the cuts would affect an estimated 150,000 people and that the proposed cuts are a violation of the Arizona Constitution.  Mary K. Reinhart , Arizona Republic  05/19/2011

Salt Lake Family Receives Settlement in Car Crash

The family of a Salt Lake City man who was killed in a car accident in March 2010 has settled a lawsuit with the driver who caused the accident. According to the suit, Efrain Torres ran a stop sign and struck the vehicle driven by the victim, who died of injuries sustained at the accident. Per the settlement, the family of the victim will accept "the policy limits offered by Efrain’s insurance companies," the Salt Lake Tribune reported.  Roxana Orellana, The Salt Lake Tribune  05/18/2011

Teen Rape Victim Awarded $12.5 Million

A Michigan jury awarded $12.5 million to a local girl who was raped during an ambulance ride in 2006. The lawsuit claimed an attendant in a Superior Ambulance repeatedly raped the 14-year-old in the back of the vehicle during a 50-minute ride. The man responsible was found guilty of and sentenced to more than three years in prison.  David Ashenfelter, Detroit Free Press  05/13/2011

Band Director Victimized Female Student, Suit Says

A former high school student in North Carolina has filed a lawsuit against her high school band director and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board over a 13-month sexual relationship she had with the man. In her lawsuit, the plaintiff claims she became a victim in the relationship and that the man "knew how to play the game." The suit also claims that the school board did not conduct a thorough background check before hiring the band director. Duke Energy Settles Class-Action Lawsuit

A federal judge in South Carolina approved a $30 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit filed against Duke Energy by more than 20,000 current and retired employees. The lawsuit claimed the company violated age-discrimination law by "converting its defined-benefit pension plan to a cash balance plan in 1997." Some of the plaintiffs have lost up to half of their accrued benefits with the changes, the lawsuit states.  Bruce Henderson, Charlotte Observer  05/18/2011
