USGS Forecasts High Earthquake Risk Linked to Oil and Gas Activity |
Scientists at the U.S. Geological Survey now estimate the risk of earthquakes in areas around Oklahoma City and Dallas-Fort Worth as on the same level as California, historically the most quake prone region of the country. The warning came in a forecast released Monday predicting oil and gas activity will raise the risk of earthquake damage in parts of Oklahoma, Texas and other states to levels not previously understood. "By including human-induced events, our assessment of earthquake hazards has significantly increased in parts of the U.S.," said Mark Petersen, chief of the USGS National Seismic Hazard Mapping Project. Dying Depositions |
Depositions routinely last 20 or more hours in CA asbestos cases, lawyers say, far outpacing federal limits and other states where the number of hours rarely exceeds single digits. The arduous and antagonistic process puts a heavy strain on mesothelioma patients typically given months to live following diagnosis and simultaneously undergoing harsh therapies like radiation. In Emails, N.H.L. Officials Conceded Concussion Risks of Fights |
The N.H.L.'s top officials have privately acknowledged that fighting could lead to concussions and long-term health problems, including depression, and that so-called enforcers frequently use pills 'to ease the pain,' according to emails unsealed during a continuing court battle with former players. The exchanges, mostly between Commissioner Gary Bettman and his top lieutenants in 2011, contradict what the league has said publicly and what it has argued in defending itself from a class-action lawsuit brought by dozens of former players over the effects of concussions. NFL Faces New Concussion-Related Lawsuit |
Former Detroit Lions defensive Tracy Scroggins was one of about 5,000 players to file concussion-related lawsuits against the NFL. Now, Scroggins filed a lawsuit in federal court in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., on Friday cites two recent developments as grounds for the litigation: an NFL executive's comments on Capitol Hill and allegations an NFL study underreported incidences of concussions.
