Honda Recalls 300,000 Additional Vehicles for Air-Bag Issue

spacer image

Honda Motor has announced a recall of 304,000 vehicles due to a problem with the air-bags, which may inflate with too much pressure during a crash. The recall covers vehicles manufactured in 2001 and 2002 across the globe. There have been 20 reported related accidents, including two fatalities in the U.S. and this is an expansion of 2008 and 2009 recalls for the same issue.  Yuri Kageyama, USA Today  12/02/2011

American Airlines Sued Over Death from Contaminated In-Flight Meal

spacer image

A lawsuit has been filed against American Airlines and Sky Chefs by the family of a man who allegedly died from contaminated chicken consumed on his flight from Spain to New York. The suit is seeking more than $1 million and accuses the defendants of “failing to properly maintain or prepare the food” and American Airlines of being “negligent in allowing Othon to board the domestic flight, failing to provide medical attention, and waiting too long to (opt for) an emergency landing."  Ben Mutzabaugh, USA Today  12/02/2011

Austin Woman Sues Bank of America

spacer image

An Austin woman filed suit Thursday against Bank of America Corp., alleging the company fraudulently sought to foreclose on her home. The suit claims that the bank wrongly invalidated a loan modification agreement because it wasn't signed by her husband even though he died in 2007, more than three years before the agreement was made. Filed in state District Court in Travis County, the lawsuit by Maria Gonzales comes on the same day a Massachusetts lawsuit accused five of the nation's largest banks — including Bank of America — of deceptive foreclosure practices.  Barry Harrell, Austin American Statesman  12/02/2011

Sandusky Accuser Reaches Settlement with The Second Mile Charity

spacer image

In a settlement between The Second Mile and one of Jerry Sandusky’s accusers, the alleged victim will be able to provide oversight in court before any of the charity’s assets are transferred. The decision, which also requires court approval before any assets are liquidated or transferred, will help ensure that assets are not diverted and are available to potential sex abuse victims of Sandusky, the charity’s founder and former Penn State football assistant coach. The plaintiff plans on filing a suit for damages after the criminal case against Sandusky has been completed.  Peter Hall, Boston Herald  12/02/2011

Delaware Men Settle with Catholic Church in Sexual Abuse Case

spacer image

Fourteen men from Delaware who claim to have been sexually assaulted as children have been awarded $7 million by three Catholic institutions that allegedly “hired and supervised predators.” The Child Victim’s Act of 2007, which “eliminated the civil statute of limitations on sex abuse and allows a two-year window to file civil suits for victims for whom the statute of limitations had passed,” applied to the 14 men. A similar policy is being considered in other states.  Jason Tomassini, Reuters  12/01/2011

PG&E Fined $38 Million for Safety Violations

spacer image

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. has agreed to pay $38 million “for a string of safety violations that led up to a” 2008 explosion near Sacramento, killing one. This is the largest fine “ever imposed in California for gas safety violations - after an administrative law judge rejected a $26 million settlement as too low.” The decision could mean much higher fines for a similar incident under investigation from 2010 in San Bruno, resulting in 8 fatalities and the destruction of 38 homes.  Jaxon Van Derbeken, San Francisco Chronicle  12/02/2011
