Emory, Texas, is the county seat of Rains County. Emory began as the city of Springville but was later renamed Emory in honor of legislator Emory Rains who is credited with passing the Texas homestead laws which have been copied by most of the United States.. In its early years Emory was a shipping point for timber harvested from the surrounding area of East Texas. Emory’s population has ebbed and flowed with economic cycles with its 2000 census population being 1,021 people. The town takes in only 1.5 square miles and has only 410 households which have a median household income of $30,119.00. The youth of the city are served by the Rains Independent School District.

Tourism and agriculture are the primary components of the town’s economy. Emory sits almost exactly midway between Lake Tawakoni on the west and Lake Fork on the east. It also sits halfway between Interstate Highway 30 on the north and Interstate Highway 20 on the south. After the Great Depression the population decreased to a low in 1936 of 447 residents. The population did not significantly rebound until recent years when it experienced an increase in population due to the influx of retirees.
