Cass County is located in northeastern Texas. It was carved out of Bowie County in 1846 and was originally known as Davis County. In 1871 the name was changed to Cass County. It is bordered on the west by Morris County, on the south by Marion County, on the southeast by Caddo Parish, Louisiana, on the northeast by Miller County, Arkansas, and on the north by Bowie County. It has a total area of 960 square miles which includes 23 square miles of water. In the 2000 census it had a population of 30,438 people comprised of 8,654 families and 12,190 households with a median family income of $35,623 and a median household income of $28,441. The per capita income was $15,777. The major highways serving the county include State Highway 155 and U.S. Highway 59. Linden is the county seat of Cass County. To go from Cass County to Tyler travel in a southwesterly direction on Highway 155 toward Gilmer through Avinger, Rock Island, New Mountain, and Friendship. In Gilmer turn left on U.S. 271 and bear right on Highway 155 toward Big Sandy passing through Pritchett. In Big Sandy turn right on U.S. 80 and turn left on Highway 155 toward Tyler passing through Winona. At the intersection with U.S. 271 turn right toward Tyler and proceed through the intersection with Loop 323. In Tyler U.S. 271 becomes Beckham Avenue which subsequently becomes Highway 110.
