Houston County is located on the western edge of the central portion of East Texas. The county seat is Crockett. The county takes in a portion of the Davy Crockett National Forest. It is bordered on the west by Leon County, on the southwest by Madison County, on the south by Walker County, on the southeast by Trinity County, on the east by Angelina County, on the northeast by Cherokee County, and on the north by Anderson County. To get to Tyler from Houston County head north on U.S. Highway 287/State Highway 19 toward Palestine passing through Grapeland and Elkhart. At Loop 256 in Palestine go right and pass through the intersection with U.S. Highway 84. Turn right at the intersection with U.S. Highway 79 and travel in a northeasterly direction through Neches and Ironton to Jacksonville. In Jacksonville head north on U.S. Highway 69 through Mount Selman and Bullard to the intersection with Loop 323 in Tyler. Turn east on Loop 323 and turn left on State Highway 110 South.
