Rains County is located in the northern part of East Texas due east of Dallas. It is one of the smaller of the East Texas counties taking in just 232 square miles. Emory is the county seat of Rains County. It is bordered on the east by Wood County, on the northeast by Hopkins County, on the west by Hunt County, and on the south by Van Zandt County. Lake Tawakoni straddles the western border of the county and covers a substantial percentage of the county. Lake Fork crosses the eastern border of the county. These two lakes are important to the economy of the county. The area which constitutes Rains County was originally part of Wood County. However, in 1870 present day Rains County was carved out of Wood County, Hopkins County, and Hunt County. Growth has been slow in Rains County with the population in 1920 being 8,099 and in 1925 being around 10,000. The population today is 11,204. After the Great Depression the population fell to around 7,000 and during World War II the population fell to a little over 4,000. By 1960 the population was less than 3,000. In 1960 Lake Tawakoni was completed and the population began to grow once again and by 1980 the county had a population of 4,839. Lake Fork Reservoir was completed in 1980 bringing in additional tourists and development to Rains County.

The primary travel route from Rains County to Tyler is southward along U.S. Highway 69. From the county seat in Emory proceed in a southeasterly direction along highway 69. Pass through Alba, Mineola, Lindale and Swan and continue until Highway 69 intersects with the northwest corner of Loop 323 in Tyler. Turn right onto Loop 323 and proceed around Loop 323 passing through its’ intersections with State Highway 64, State Highway 31, State Highway 155, and U.S. Highway 169. At the intersection of Loop 323 and State Highway 110 turn left onto State Highway 110 South and continue to the intersection with Golden Road.
