Texas Road Safety Questioned in Fight for Bigger Trucks
spacer image
Proposals in Congress would allow bigger, heavier trucks on the roads, possibly with younger and less rested drivers at the wheel. The most contentious proposal is one that would allow trucks to pull twin 33-foot-long trailers, up from the current federal limit of two 28-foot trailers. That's an additional 10 feet per rig. Also of concern is a proposal to lower the minimum age of interstate truck drivers from 21 to 18.

The city of Bellaire, Texas has agreed to pay $110,000 to settle the lawsuit over the shooting death of a baseball player nearly seven years ago. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court after the man was shot and killed by police in Bellaire. The deal was agreed upon on the first day of the scheduled trial. The shooting took place in December 2008 when the man was stopped by police on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, which turned out to be his own. Police forced the man to the ground and ended up shooting him three times.

Judge Tosses Penn. Student's Brain Injury Lawsuit
spacer image
A lawsuit against Lafayette College in Pennsylvania over a student's brain injury has been tossed out by a Lehigh County judge. The lawsuit was filed by the family of a student who was struck by a habitual drunken driver while walking in between her car and crew practice. The team's parking arrangements had been changed by the school, forcing team members to walk on a dangerous path where another individual had been struck and killed just months earlier, the lawsuit contends. The girl was incapacitated during the incident and her parents filed the lawsuit on her behalf. The judge in the case ruled that the school could not be held responsible for the accident which took place off campus.
