Death of Girl at Los Angeles Rave Sparks Lawsuit

spacer image

A California family has filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission and an event company over the death of a teenage girl at a Coliseum rave in June 2010. According to the suit, the girl took Ecstasy at the event, and when she needed medical attention, "overcrowded and understaffed conditions delayed the response of on-site security and emergency medical services providers." The suit claims event staff should have known the rave would have "enabled widespread illegal and illicit activity." The lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages.  Rong-Gong Lin II and Andrew Blankstein, LA Times  09/08/2011

Palm Beach Deputies Settle Wrongful Arrest Suit

The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office has agreed to a $600,000 settlement in a wrongful arrest lawsuit filed by a local man and his son. The plaintiff's claimed they were arrested on exaggerated charges of "aggravated stalking, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault" by local deputies. The charges were later dropped, but not before the plaintiffs spent nearly 3 months away from their home and in court hearings, spending more than $200,000 in lawyer fees.  Jerome Burdi, Orlando Sentinel  09/08/2011

Fired Walgreens Employee Files Lawsuit

A former Walgreens pharmacist has filed a lawsuit against his former employer for firing him after he prevented a late-night robbery at a Michigan store. In May, the Walgreens was held up by two masked gunmen in the early hours of the morning. The plaintiff drew his concealed weapon and fired shots at the robbers, causing them to flee. He was fired a few days later for "violating Walgreens' "non-escalation policy" as well as a policy barring employees from carrying weapons while they work." His firing, the suit says, violates many of his rights, including the right to bear arms.  James B. Kelleher, Reuters  09/08/2011

A Las Vegas family has filed a $9 million lawsuit against the Metropolitan Police Department after the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man in July. In the lawsuit, the mother claims she had called police officers for help with her son, who had ulcerative colitis and was emotionally unstable after a breakup with his girlfriend. The lawsuit alleges officers shot the man 14 times without warning because he was carrying and waving a kitchen knife. The suit is seeking unspecified damages.  Francis McCabe, Las Vegas Review Journal  09/08/2011

A Matter of Risk: Radiation, Drinking Water and Deception

spacer image

For the past year the KHOU 11 News I-Team has been investigating the quality of the tap water in Texas.c What they found was surprising: That many of the state's communities have a real problem with radioactive contamination in their local drinking water. However, the team also discovered that many of those consuming it didn't know they were also being exposed to a health risk. With these latest discoveries, KHOU 11 News is presenting Investigative Reporter Mark Greenblatt’s findings in a comprehensive one-hour special.  Mark Greenblatt, KHOU-TV  09/09/2011
