Fracking Boom on UT's W. TX Lands Linked to Spills, Air Pollution

A report, by the Environment Texas Research & Policy Center and the Frontier Group, found that hydraulic fracturing boom on University of Texas System lands in West Texas has polluted soil, groundwater and air. At least 1.6 million gallons of oil, saltwater and other pollutants have spilled from wells and associated equipment on UT System-owned land since 2008, said the report, which drew from system and Texas Railroad Commission records. In addition, the report said, vast quantities of methane have been released by the 4,132 wells drilled since 2005 that were subjected to hydraulic fracturing.

Sony Hacking Lawsuit Settled

Sony has settled a lawsuit over a hacking incident that took place surrounding the release of the movie "The Interview." The lawsuit was filed against Sony Pictures Entertainment by nine former employees who alleged that their personal data was released during the incident. According to a recent court filing, the nine plaintiffs have until October 19 to submit a motion for preliminary approval of the proposed settlement case. Details of the settlement have not been released.

Jessica Alba's Eco-Friendly Beauty Line Accused of Deceptive Packaging

A lawsuit has been filed against Honest Company Inc., an eco-friendly beauty line started by actress Jessica Alba, alleging deceptive packaging. The lawsuit was filed by a consumer who alleges that the eco-friendly line's packaging claims to be "natural" and "nontoxic," while containing synthetic ingredients. The lawsuit cites studies from an environmental group which stated that some of the company's ingredients are potentially hazardous.

Lawsuit Claims Girl Was Sexually Assaulted on American Airlines Flight

The family of a teenage girl who alleges she was sexually assaulted on an American Airlines flight has filed a lawsuit against the suspect and the airline. The girl flying unaccompanied from New York to Iowa when the alleged assault took place. According to the lawsuit, the defendant moved to an unoccupied seat by the girl, who was asleep during the flight. The girl alleges that she woke up while the man touching her. A flight attendant was notified and the FBI met the man at the airport in Iowa. He was arrested on charges including engaging in sexual contact with a victim between the ages of 12 and 16.

Clinic Severing Ties with Patients Suing Former Spine Surgeon

The Yankton Medical Clinic, which provides basic medical services for residents in southeastern S. Dakota and northeastern Nebraska is withdrawing care to patients who are suing Dr. Allen Sossan (a former spine surgeon) and the doctors who credentialed him. Patients who filed suit and who also go to the Yankton Medical Clinic were notified by letter late last month that the clinic and its more than four dozen health providers are severing their relationships. The patients were informed that the clinic will cease treating them after Sept. 23.

W. Virginia Explosion Victims' Families to Receive $15 Million Insurance Settlement

A judge in West Virginia has approved the distribution of more than $15 million in insurance funds to the families of three workers killed in AL Solutions plant explosion. The families plan to dismiss wrongful death claims against AL Solutions and its parent, Tygem Holdings, Inc., once they collect the insurance settlement.
