A former Delaware state senator filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Maine ski resort where he and his two daughters sustained injuries after a 35-foot fall from a broken chairlift. The plaintiff suffered a broken back and a traumatic brain injury. His daughters, ages 13 and 11 at the time of the accident, sustained head and back injuries. The lawsuit alleges that the ski resort was negligent and that they did not heed warning signs that the chairlift had problems. The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of monetary damages.

The Texas Civil Rights Project has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a sheriff's deputy and former Round Rock police officer who interviewed for a position as constable in Williamson County, Texas. The lawsuit alleges that, during the interview, the man was asked questions that violated his state and federal constitutional rights. According to the lawsuit, the sheriff's deputy was asked his views about controversial topics during his interview. The sheriff's deputy says interviewers "unabashedly and illegally asked questions about the applicants' views on abortion, gay marriage, politics and whether they voted conservatively and voted Republican and their religious affiliation." The lawsuit seeks unspecified monetary damages, including attorney fees.

University Rower Sees Settlement Over Injury Lawsuit

The University of Iowa has agreed to pay $300,000 to a former member of their women's rowing team to settle a lawsuit she brought against them in 2010. In her lawsuit against the school, the plaintiff alleged that the rowing coach's intense training workouts and lax oversight left her with debilitating leg injuries. The plaintiff claims that she suffered from chronic exertional syndrome as a result of the intense workouts. The injury, she says, has made it difficult for her to walk and has required multiple surgeries. The $300,000 settlement comes in addition to the $60,000 the university paid the plaintiff which allowed her to keep an athletic scholarship after she quit the team and transferred to another school.

A man who sustained "life-changing" injuries when he fell from the second level at a golf facility in Dallas, Texas has filed a lawsuit. The plaintiff was enjoying himself at the entertainment and golf complex when he fell off of a second story balcony and the net below failed to protect him. He claims that because of injuries he sustained that day, his career in the U.S. Air Force is over and that he will live with pain and disabilities for the rest of his life. The lawsuit alleges that the facility gave patrons a false sense of security with the safety nets.

Laser Surgery Lawsuits Against Non-Doctors on the Rise

spacer image

More patients are filing claims after being burned, scarred or otherwise injured during laser surgeries performed by non-doctors, a new study shows. Researchers found 75 out of 175 legal cases related to procedures like laser hair or scar removal involved someone other than a physician operating the laser. The proportion of lawsuits listing a nurse, medical assistant, technician or "intern" as the operator more than doubled between 2008 and 2011.
