Mortgage Suit Filed Against Morgan Stanley

Five Detroit residents have filed a lawsuit against Morgan Stanley, claiming the bank "encouraged mortgage lenders to give out high-risk loans that had a strong possibility of foreclosure." This suit is one of the first brought directly against an investment bank instead of against the original mortgage lenders. The suit is seeking class-action status to represent nearly 6,000 black homeowners in the Detroit area.

A Bexar County jury on Monday awarded a woman more than $867,000 in her lawsuit against two attorneys. Jurors found an attorney, his law firm and a former lawyer committed malice, fraud and theft by misappropriating $75,000 from the settlement of a client, Isabel Sloan. Part of the verdict hammered the firm for gross negligence and false, misleading and deceptive acts and practices.

FDA: More Drugs May Be Linked to Meningitis Outbreak

spacer image

Federal regulators broadened their warning to doctors Monday, raising questions about the potential risk of infection from other injectable drugs made by the specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts linked to the burgeoning fungal-meningitis outbreak. The FDA said it received reports of three new cases of infections tied to two additional products made by the New England Compounding Center (NECC). One involves the steroid triamcinolone acetonide, which is different from the steroid implicated in the existing meningitis cases. A patient who may now have meningitis received an epidural of the medication, the FDA said.

A Risky Lifeline for the Elderly Is Costing Some Their Homes

spacer image

Reverse mortgages, which allow homeowners 62 and older to borrow money against the value of their homes and not pay it back until they move out or die, have long been fraught with problems. But federal and state regulators are documenting new instances of abuse as smaller mortgage brokers, including former subprime lenders, flood the market after the recent exit of big banks and as defaults on the loans hit record rates. Some lenders are aggressively pitching loans to seniors who cannot afford the fees associated with them, not to mention the property taxes and maintenance. Others are wooing seniors with promises that the loans are free money that can be used to finance long-coveted cruises, without clearly explaining the risks.

Deaths at Dallas Worksite Prompts Lawsuit

spacer image

Earlier this month, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed against a Texas crane company and a general contractor over the death of two workers during construction on a building at the University of Texas at Dallas. On July 27, a crane toppled from the building, killing two men who were working with the crane at the time. The suit accuses the defendants of failing to ensure proper safety conditions at the work site, and that parts that connect two crane segments were prematurely removed that day, which may have contributed to the accident.
