Minn. Catholic Leaders Agree to Settlement of Lawsuit

A lawsuit filed by a man who was sexually abused by a priest as a boy has been settled and, as part of the settlement, Roman Catholic leaders in Minnesota have agreed to enact new procedures to protect children from sex abuse by the clergy. According to the settlement, if church officials are made aware of sex abuse allegations, they are to report them to law enforcement and wait until the investigation is complete until they begin their own process of investigation. The monetary terms of the settlement between the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and the Diocese of Winona and the victim were not disclosed.

The Texas Windstorm Insurance Association settled a lawsuit Monday with the Brownsville school district over unpaid claims, nearly a year after racist emails to and from top agency officials were uncovered in the case. The quasi-governmental insurer of last resort agreed to pay $7.9 million to the district for claims that were not paid following Hurricane Ike in 2008, according to court records filed in state district court in Cameron County.

Rent-to-Own Company Accused of Spying Settles for $28 Million

Rent-to-own retailer Aaron's Inc. will pay $28.4 million, including $25 million in consumer refunds, to settle claims that it violated California consumer and privacy laws, Attorney General Kamala Harris announced Monday. The settlement stems in part from Aaron's installation of spyware on its rental computers without customers' knowledge. The monitoring software allowed Aaron's franchisees to log users' keystrokes, grab screenshots and even capture images and sounds through the computers' devices. Another feature presented users with "fake" software registration screens, a ruse, the AG's office said, to collect consumers' information.

Class Action Lawsuit Targets Calif. Nursing Homes
spacer image
A recently filed class action lawsuit alleges that 57 nursing homes across the state of California are guilty of fraud, unfair business practices and violation of residents' rights. The lawsuit was filed October 7 in Los Angeles Superior Court and contends that the owner of Brius Management and Brius LLC, which owns Novato Healthcare, was "a serial violator of skilled nursing industry laws and regulations." The lawsuit alleges that the home at which the plaintiff stayed was so understaffed that a nurse attempted to move the plaintiff by herself, resulting in his injury. The lawsuit seeks compliance with health care facility laws and regulations, the reporting of future violations, the surveying of patients to detect abuses and monetary damages.
