Judge Won't Extend Deadline in Spill Case |
| A judge has refused to extend a Nov. 1 deadline for plaintiffs to opt out of a proposed settlement of economic claims against BP over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Some prospective claimants argued that they didn't have enough information to decide whether to opt out, since many have not received settlement offers from the court-supervised Deepwater Horizon Claims Center created as part of the proposed deal. But in an order this week, U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier of New Orleans said an extension now would be "premature and unnecessary." Gulf Oil Sheen Stirs Up New Worries |
| Confirmation that an oil sheen reported last month is consistent with oil from BP’s blown-out Macondo well comes at a critical time, just as talks intensify about resolving penalties and fines from the disaster in April 2010. Scientists have said that residual oil from the well and the wreckage of the Deepwater Horizon rig and equipment on the seafloor that was used to cap the well could be dredged up for months and years to come. Comic Company Files Copyright Lawsuit |
| A Colorado-based comic book company has filed a lawsuit against Disney over copyright ownership claims to several comic superheroes. The company, Stan Lee Media Inc. claims that comic book creator Stan Lee gave the copyrights to his characters to a predecessor of their company in 1988; months later, Lee signed an agreement with Marvel, reportedly giving them rights to the characters. Marvel, which is now owned by Disney, is behind many of the recent superhero movies that have earned billions at the box office. The plaintiffs in the suit claim they are entitled to a chunk of those earnings. John Ingold, Denver Post 10/10/2012 | Read Article: Denver Post |
